Blind Cycle Tour 2005/2006

On July 9, 2005, Sebastian Burger began a trip with blind passengers on a Hase Pino tandem from Germany to Singapore. He had to arrive in Singapore in March of 2006 in order to reach the ship he booked.

The most special thing about the Blind Cycle Tour was that the blind passengers changed regularly. Around 18 blind or visually impaired people from Germany, Austria, and India signed up as passengers for various parts of the tour. The whole project was based on the idea of international understanding and integration of the handicapped.

Blind people were empowered to take part in the sporting endeavor and accomplish every meter to Singapore using their own strength. Based on experience, this form of independent travel with tents and cookers can be very fulfilling. It is a unique experience of freedom. The idea was that this feeling of independence should also be experienced by the blind. Between July 2005 and March 2006, the group traversed the following countries: Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

In 225 days, 14,300 km (8,900 miles) were traveled. There was even enough time for getting to know the countries and their people along the way.

The two tandems were piloted by Sebastian Burger and Susanne Kammer (who was replaced after India by Stefanie Neumann). Sebastian Burger had already gained experience with such tours from a similar project in which he was able to collect various strangers in South America to accompany him spontaneously as passengers on his tandem (Join me Tour).
